How Parent Participation Works

History

Alice Carlson was founded by a group of educators and parents with the common goal to create a learning and social community for their children.  As a result of their efforts, each child at Alice Carlson enjoys the privilege of learning within a framework of cooperation between family, community, and school.

Goal

We strive to provide a community with parents, teachers, administrators, and others aligned for the goal of allowing each child to succeed.

The Contract

Upon enrolling your child, you will be asked to sign a Parent Participation Contract, pledging to complete the annual minimum commitment, and complete a survey of your skills and interests for getting involved.

Required Hours

Alice Carlson needs full, active participation by the families of every student. The minimum volunteer commitment is 20 hours. 

Submitting Hours

Each family records their hours and may submit it to the office on the form sent home.The PTA VP of Parent Involvement tracks the hours spent and hours needed, and the Classroom Coordinators can help families learn about jobs where help is needed.

Getting  Involved

Family involvement in Alice Carlson provides a quantity and quality of individualized learning and enrichment activities that encourage our children to experience success, high levels of self esteem, cooperative problem solving, and respect for each other.

Volunteers bring rich resources that can not usually be duplicated by the professional staff.  These span a wide range of knowledge and skill and parents are encouraged to actively seek out how they can best assist the school.  The active and cooperative participation of all individual families is the lifeblood of our open, alternative school program.

Opportunities exist and skills are needed both in the classroom with the children and in committee and leadership areas.  Parents often start the first years predominantly in the classroom and serving on committees, and progressing toward more coordination and leadership time with passing years.

Families are also encouraged to attend at-school parent education meetings, selected off-site education and conferences, and meetings of the School Advisory Council.  Child care is provided at many of these meetings.

Participating in school activities is not only a way to make exciting things happen for our children and ensure the continued success of our school.  It’s also fun to get involved in the Carlson community.

Other Programs & Activities

Park for the Arts  Cars park in our field and on our parking lot during the TCU football games.  The money raised goes toward fine arts programs and Friday Club activities. The season runs from September thru November.

Volunteer Opportunity  At least 10 volunteers are needed for each game to help direct cars.  Contact the chairperson to volunteer.

Family Learning Nights  Family nights to celebrate learning such as Mathoween, Family Science Night at the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History, Family Art Night, Health and Fitness Night, Family Literacy Night, and others.  Three evenings are scheduled during the year with the themes changing.  Watch for dates and information posted on At-a-Glance found under Snapshot on the home page.  Be sure and also check the Carlson Weekly and school fliers sent home.

Volunteer Opportunity  Volunteers are sometimes needed to staff booths, assist with set up and clean up, and to prepare materials for the events.

Family Socials These are fun activities sometimes sponsored by a classroom for Carlson families.  Activities in the past have included bowling, miniature golf, roller skating, community service activities, and much more.

Fantastic Fridays Each class is assigned a Friday to provide lunch for the staff at Alice Carlson to show our appreciation for all that they do for our children.

Mini Fundraisers We participate in many small fundraisers such as Boxtops for Education, Scholarships, Central Market Foodie cards, Tom Thumb Reward cards, Cook Cuts for Kids, and many more.

RIF Reading is Fundamental is a program where all students received free books several times a year. 

Volunteer Opportunity Several volunteers needed on RIF day to assist students in selecting their books.  Watch for dates and information posted on At-a-Glance found under Snapshot on the home page.  Be sure and also check the Carlson Weekly and school fliers sent home. Contact the RIF chairperson to volunteer.

Outdoor Learning Environment (OLE)  Once a tennis court, this garden located in the back corner of the school was developed to represent different regions in Texas using native plants. 

Volunteer Opportunity Workers needed on designated dates to clean, rake, plant or mow. No green thumb required.

Friday Clubs Club structure varies according to grade level.  K-3 grade level clubs are taught by parent volunteers. Parents share an interest or talent they have with students.  The length of clubs vary.
